Henry Wadsworth Longfellow - The Wreck Of The Hesperus

Why does the narrator use this type of tone to narrate the poem? What mood do you think best describes the poem? After reading and hearing the poem read to you how does the poem make you feel. What different things did you notice when the poem was read to you?

  1. I believe that the narrator used this type of tone to show that this poem is a "story" narrated by perhaps, an old sailor that heard it. I think that the mood of this poem is fear and panic. This poem makes me feel gloomy and frightened. When I heard the poem, I noticed the tone of the captain's and his daughter's speech. I saw the mood being created in the poem more clearly as well.

  3. Tharushi you have made some very goods points. I loved your viewpoints on the poem. The tone and mood of this poem is serious and formal because the author is recounting a tragic event at Norman’s Reef in Gloucester, Massachusetts. The author uses very strong imagery and sensory details to create this mood so that the reader feels the direness of the situation. I have read the poem several times and each time I get a cold chill. I can feel the pain and hopelessness of the daughter and the fisherman that finds her. In turn, the poem is highly emotional.
