How did the short story "The Lady, or the Tiger?" affect your life? Did the ending make you feel happy or sad for the princess and her lover?

Why did the princess have difficulty deciding which door to indicate to her lover?

  1. The princess had difficulty deciding which door to pick for her lover because she loved him and did not want him to be eaten by the tiger in one door, yet at the same time she was jealous that her lover would be married to some other beautiful woman that she hated instead of her in the other door. The ending made me feel sad for the two characters because I wanted them to be together and not apart. Also, I think, that the princess would pick the door with the lion for her lover because she was barbaric and she seems to hate this woman so much that it seems to me that she would rather have her lover killed than married to this woman.

  2. The short story affected my life in many ways. For one, it made me look at our heart through a different perspective. It made me realize that we have a balance of a good and evil side in our hearts. Although, I previously stated that the tiger would come out of the door, now that I think about it, the door we pick could determine that types of people we are. For example, if we pick the door with the tiger it might mean that we are jealous and cruel. Yet, if we pick the door with the lady, it could mean that you are forgiving and kind.

  3. Well when you are deciding which one came out the lady or the tiger you have to put yourself in the place of a young girl in love. Why would she have chosen the lady? if you read the story you would see that they described the way she felt thinking about the young man with another woman it drove her crazy. but when she thought about the tiger getting him the only thing she could think of was the amount of blood she would have to witness. Although she would probably be upset for a while because of the love of her life died, being the jealous girl she was she couldn't go through seeing him with another woman. Also you have to look at how she was raised she was a semi-barbaric princess which is a very good point that leads to her choosing the tiger. the saying "if i cant have him no one can" defiantly goes well with the princess.

  4. Maybe this happen... it is a fairy tale...He turned, and with a firm and rapid step he walked across the empty space. Every heart stopped beating, every breath was held, every eye was fixed immovably upon that man. Without the slightest hesitation he went to the door on the right and opened it. At first he held the door as only to see partially inside. With the amount of vision he had, he could clearly tell that inside stood a tiger. He quickly shut the door and pondered his options. He looked around him and with mere luck he spotted a rock with a jagged edge. He grabbed the rock; the crowd erupted into laughter at the thought of the man getting ready to fight the tiger. Even so, the man was ready, he was ready. He opened the door for the second time, and with the quickness of a rabbit leapt out of the way of the tiger. The tiger now released from the behind door was ready to kill. The tiger was hungry, and looked as though it had not been fed in days. As the tiger stood there growling, the crowd grew silent, the tiger grew hungrier, and the man grew more and more fearful of his battle.

  5. Tharushi ~ I agree with your comments-post! Likewise,I was sad at the end and somewhat surprised with the ended.I had never read this short story and found it very good. This story was written in 1887. It amazes me how today's world is so advanced with technology. You can't compare this classic literature to a I-Phone. I-Phones, I-Pads, I-Pods they are a fads. They come and go. People don't real care. On the other hand, stories like this stands the test of time.

  6. You are right Ms. West, this is a timeless short story and I really love the way it is so mysterious and how it lets the reader decide for themselves the ending of the story. I personally believe that this is one of the best works of literature that I have ever read.
